Get the attributes of VSAM dataset.

Post by Priyank Sharma »

Hi,

How can we get the attributes of all the VSAMs which are available on a mainframe? How can IDCAMS work for this kind of a situation? Please advise.

Are you really sure you want this?  There may thousands or tens of thousands of VSAM data sets on any given mainframe.  Your output may run several million lines.

There is no easy way to do this since there are no standard ways to name data sets.

Thanks Robert. This is for a valuation we are doing. And there were similar question we had. Can not this be automated?

You could probably use DCOLLECT but it could take a while to set it up correctly.

You can use IDCAMS with LISTC. First you do a LISTC on the Mastercatalog to see which User Catalogs exists. Then LISTC every User Catalog to see the VSAM Attributtes for each Dataset. Please note that the Mastercat also may contain VSAM Dataset Attributtes.

Does that mean Mastercatalog itself is a VSAM?
