How does the High Availability in mainframes is achieved?

We know that everyone says that mainframes are highly available and very stable but let's assume the system goes down - is there a concept of running a "passive system" in mainframe in prod, in parallel to the "active" one?

I was trying to understand the check pint restart at my new project. Nearly every program has a GSAM file which has got check point restart in it. That's whay I ask for GSAM.

I've also seen other projects in which they are using check-point restart but then they used DB2 for it. So ...

What is check point restart in IMS? Is having GSAM file necessary, in a program having the check point restart?
