Testing field migrations safely

Has anyone here faced something similar or have a suggestion? when data definitions change, how do you ensure no corruption after deploy? Appreciate any ideas or examples you can share.

There is only one way:  full integration testing using work/test copies of production data and all associated/affected application systems, preferably involving the users of the actual production system(s) and then getting their sign-off on the changes.
