Suggestions invited for "Terminology is Important" section.

Hi,

I thought that it'd be nice to ask members-of-the-forum for the topics which they might want to discuss in the "Terminology is Important" section of this Forum.

I've some more topics in mind, apart from what are already listed in this section, however, I believe members must be having some topics with him/her for sure, which s/he would want to appear in this section -- if you think there are some topics which you find appropriate to appear under this section, please do share them in here.

In case, you want to just coin out the topic and don't really have enough time to write the verbiage for that - just share the topic I'll prepare the topic and share it with "you" - and we'll work on that then, before publishing.

Hope to see you around,

Regards,

Some of the topics which I belive should fit-in in this category, which we're trying to build, are:
  • 1. CPU time and elapsed time of the Job.
    2. MSU Balancing and CPU saving.
    3. Exceptions and EXCP.
    4. PDS and PDSE.
    5. MSU and MIPS.
I'm sure there are many more of this nature, If you've one in mind, please let us know.

Regards,

Thanks PK.

We're trying to talk about "Terminonogy" not "Technology". For example,

1. JES2/JES3 rather sounds like Technology comparison. As of now let's put it in another list (we'll talk about this list later).

2. PLAN & PACKAGE - sounds a good candiate.

3.ESDS/KSDS/RRDS/QSAM - Probably we can talk about VSAM and QSAM here. ESDS/KSDS/RRDS becomes the type of VSAMs, which I believe does not fit in this discussion. Also, we've talked about different access methods in the respective sections. For example, please see this section: SMS & VSAM and BDAM, BSAM, QSAM, BPAM, ISAM, OAM.

4. IMS DB/DC - This again sound like technology comparison. Though this also goes in another list for now.

5. DFSORT/SYNCSORT - This sounds good; though in respective sections, we've talked about them. however, it seems worth talking here, along with CA-Sort.

6. ICETOOL/ICEMAN - This again sound like technology comparison. Though this also goes in another list for now.

7.SORT EQUALS/NO EQUALS - This again sound like technology comparison. Though this also goes in another list for now.

8.NO OF BYTES BLOCKS/TRACKS/CYLINDERS - This again sound like technology comparison. Though this also goes in another list for now. But we can talk about BLOCKS/TRACKS/CYLINDERS.

9. COND CODE in JCL/IF THEN This again sound like technology comparison.

Also from my list instead of "4. PDS and PDSE." I should have used "4. PDS and Library."

Said all that, the final list looks like:

1. PLAN and PACKAGE.
2. DFSORT/SYNCSORT.
3. BLOCKS and TRACKS.
4. CPU time and elapsed time of the Job.
5. MSU Balancing and CPU saving.
6. Exceptions and EXCP.
7. PDS and Library.
8. MSU and MIPS.

We need to look back at this list again and probably refine it. Hopefully, I was able to convey the idea a bit, behind this section...

And "another list" is nothing but they are the topics, which can be listed in introducing different section of this Forum. Every sub-Forum (or section), over here, starts with "What is ..." thread, as one of the very first thread. This thread usually talks about what the section is all about and some specific technology terms which are discussed in that part fo the Forum.

2.Unload / Select
3.Load / Insert
4. Reorg / compress
5. Rexx codes / ISPF panels

correct me if I had put them into wrong buckets again

Hi Robert,

This is already in place, I think: Generation and Version in GDG.

Thanks,

Thanks Pk and Robert.

Yeah 'generations and versions' is already in discussion.

The revised list with new addition is:

1. PLAN and PACKAGE.
2. DFSORT/SYNCSORT.
3. BLOCKS and TRACKS.
4. CPU time and elapsed time of the Job.
5. MSU Balancing and CPU saving.
6. Exceptions and EXCP.
7. PDS and Library.
8. MSU and MIPS.

9. "Rexx Panels" and ISPF panels.

On the other hand, Pk, in the following I've some follow up:

1.Consistency token - with what it is confused with?

2.Unload / Select - are you trying to say that, unload and select in DB2 are used interchangeably? I've seen that kind of confusion, though, very seldom...

3.Load / Insert - are you trying to say that, load and insert in DB2 are used interchangeably?

4. Reorg / compress - I need to work on this topic. I've not heard it being misused. If you have some article/verbiage with you, please PM me.

Again, thanks for your time. Much appreciate it,

This is a nice initiative. One possible topic might be:

Bytes, Bits and "word".

Thanks for participating in. That topic sounds good.

Once I get some more topics (to get a 15 topics maximum, after that it'll be a second round), I'll publish the list and then we'll take it from there.

Also the similar case with select and the corresponding unload or DSNTIAUL

I mean to say when and where these are used probably more to do with the technical aspect

This is a good initiative and sounds like to sahpe up now. Probably you can disucuss a very trivial topic, though used in a very confused manner: "Mainframe Computers" and "Personal Computers"? Just a thought.

That sounds good though too general to start with, though let's keep it in. With this the final list is:

1. PLAN and PACKAGE.
2. DFSORT/SYNCSORT.
3. BLOCKS and TRACKS.
4. CPU time and elapsed time of the Job.
5. MSU Balancing and CPU saving.
6. Exceptions and EXCP.
7. PDS and Library.
8. MSU and MIPS.

9. "Rexx Panels" and ISPF panels.
10. Bytes, Bits and "Word".
11. "Mainframe Computers" and "Personal Computers".
