Hi all,

How could any one know the system information of the mainframe? For example, if I am in a new comapny and I want to know the memory used, the CPU in use, number of DASDs and tape drives available to the mainframe. Can this be done using some utility?

In general, there are some console commands which provide some -- but not all -- of what you asked about. Some of the information you asked about is not easy to obtain other than through your site support group (for example, at a site using shared DASD which devices "belong" to which system is more a philosophical question than a real issue). And most sites prevent application programmers from being able to execute console commands so you typically will not be able to get any of the system information you want except through your site support group.

If you have a product like SYSVIEW, OMEGAMON, MAINVIEW, or TMON you can use those products to see your system configuration. If you are authorized to issue operator display commands [such as through SDSF], the D M [Display Matrix] command will show you some of the information you're interested in. To display devices you can also use the D U [Display Units] command to see more information [See System Commands manual for details].
