Mainframe Technical Specialist.

The Mainframe Technical Specialist, Mainframe Support, reports to the Team Lead, Data and Content Management Services, and is responsible for providing technical expertise on the following activities:

Accountabilities:
  • Provides 2nd Level 7 x 24 on-call Mainframe Database Support on a rotating basis
  • Provides day to day database administration of the IMS and DB2 subsystem databases (including database backup and recovery services, reorgs, space management, security grants, etc.)
  • Manages and monitors ongoing IMS and/or DB2 database performance and capacity to ensure service level expectations are maintained
  • Manage access to system level DBMS resources based on GLI Security procedures and policies
  • Identifies resource utilization trends and recommends options for addressing capacity issues in order to meet business requirements and service level agreements
  • Manages lifecycle for Mainframe Database software tools (excluding major product upgrades or product replacements)
  • Maintains operational documentation for IMS and DB2 infrastructure
  • Provides technical expertise for project and upgrade implementations
  • Provides basic database training to the Operations group and Service Desk
  • Identifies process improvements and opportunities within mainframe scope and other services within Shared Enterprise Services (SES)
  • Provides mainframe database disaster recovery services
  • Works with Service Delivery and Change Management to ensure non disruptive implementation of mainframe database infrastructure.

Qualifications and Competencies:
  • Experience: Minimum 4 years in a large-scale IS operation or a technical support organization
  • Education: Education/skills acquired through completion of a post-secondary degree or equivalent (e.g. Degree or diploma in a related discipline like Computer Science or an equivalent combination of training and experience)
  • Strong knowledge and experience with IMS and DB2 databases subsystems
  • Strong knowledge of database administration tools and functions (e.g. database utility programs, database space management, DB2 rebinds, queries, scans, reorgs, security grants, IMS Gens, etc.)
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills and knowledge of software diagnosis techniques
  • Knowledge of database design / logic
  • Knowledge of mainframe hardware, software and tools
  • Knowledge of I.S. processes and procedures including change management and incident management
  • Knowledge of database back-up and recovery tools (Image Copies, Loads/Unloads, Recovery, DBRC)
  • Knowledge of programming languages (one or more of - PL/I, Cobol, Assembler, REXX, CLIST)
  • Ability to use office productivity tools
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills including the ability to communicate effectively to a non-technical audience
  • Ability to work in a fast paced environment and have strong team work skills
  • In addition to the above it would be an asset (not necessary) to have the following technical skills:
  • Knowledge of system management tools e.g. SMP/E
  • Knowledge of Source to Load tool (ChangeMan, ISPW)
  • Knowledge of infrastructure tools (e.g. compilers/link editor/binder)
  • Knowledge of system utilities (e.g.; IEBCOPY,SYNCSORT)
  • Knowledge of ISPF customization
  • Knowledge of risk analysis
  • Knowledge of industry directions
  • Knowledge of change and problem logging tool (Remedy)
  • Knowledge of ADABAS / Natural
