How About A Performance / Capacity / Software Cost Forum?

Post by Anuj Dhawan »

Hi,

For details, please have a look at this post from Martin: http://www.zmainframes.com/viewtopic.ph ... 3236#p3236 -- we'd need 30 votes to get it going.

Just to let you know a bit about him -- Martin is a well-known mainframe performance guy. He has around 30 years of experience (please correct me here, if needed be). He is an IBMer, Mainframe Performance Guy and zChampion.

@Mainframe help - which one did you have in mind? None seem really related to Perf / Cap.

http://www.zmainframes.com/viewforum.php?f=12 can be a good place? I think, along with SMS SMF can be dealt with and then capacity planning can follow up?

SMF / Performance / Capacity are largely unrelated to (DF)SMS and the access methods listed there. By the way there don't seem to be other discipline newsgroups (such as "Security" and "Availability") either.

IMO a security forum should be HEAVILY watched moderated
if we want to stay clean of lowly technicalities and dangerous suggestions

in most of the forums(*) the security related questions are ...
how can I give access to my datasets to a colleague/friend
How can I protect my personal datasets
how can I find if I have access to ...
how can I find the userid of ...
how can I submit a job with somebody else credentials
what command should I use to ...

the real problem is that there is always some idiot who gives the syntax of the commands to be used

(*) those who have ibm mainframe[s] in the name ( at least )
cheers

When I tell somebody to RTFM or STFW I usually have the page open in another tab/window of my browser,
so that I am sure that the information requested can be reached with a very small effort 8-)

I agree and I'm not sure if we'll ever see the "real security" question/s soon apart from what you've listed...

Talking from the experience from the other Forums I'm not sure if we'll get enough audience on these aspects and fear if such Forums will die with no/very-less participation? What is your say on this?
Thanks,
Anuj

There are also people who might ask questions to climb a mountain since it exists we might just need to wait and watch

Hi Barbie,

As Ankit has said this Forum will be based on the discussions on the IT Performance, specifically about the IBM Mainframes. Performance can include, but not limited to, COBOL code optimization, Database Tuning, usage of compiler options, CPU time consideration, MIPS optimization, analysis of SMF records.

For Capacity planning, I'd say -- the capacity planner is someone who should be able to tell when the company’s IT systems will no longer be able to provide acceptable service to end users. Since this is a planning function, it’s assumed this information will be made available before the event occurs. This job includes many sub-functions that support this kind of analysis, including workload tracking and trending, setting and monitoring Service Level Agreements (SLAs), and evaluating different upgrade scenarios.

Software Cost, I hope, is self explanatory.

Hope this helps.
Thanks,
Anuj

This forum is operational now and one can participate in at: http://www.zmainframes.com/viewforum.php?f=98

You can still vote for this week as we'll be observing if there are any cosmetic problems with this Forum in posting, creating posts etc. and then the voting will be closed.

Thanks for your patience and votes so far - appreciate that... :)
Thanks,
Anuj
