really there is no need at all to login as root
You can do all he privileged work from the first account ( with administrator capabilities ) the install process defines at installation
after that the only thing You have to do is to run the DIRTY tasks using sudo .....
it will ask You for a password and you should type the password You are using for Your account ( with administrator capabilities )
cheers

When I tell somebody to RTFM or STFW I usually have the page open in another tab/window of my browser,
so that I am sure that the information requested can be reached with a very small effort 8-)

Look here: http://askubuntu.com/questions/44418/ho ... root-login and http://askubuntu.com/questions/91598/ho ... in-as-root.

But how did you install ubuntu -- I did it using wubi and I've not faced this yet (never needed to), though I've not logged in for long on Ubuntu.
Thanks,
Anuj

thats something You would not want to do ...
the only folder that Yo can safely CHMOD 775 and CHOWN yourself is /usr/local

and using sudo You can do anything You want/like
