A system programmer installs and updates system software, as opposed to an application programmer who develops, tests, and implements applications on the system. An architect is usually (the title is NOT fixed and somewhat depends upon the organization) an application designer that makes sure the various subsystems work together to accomplish the business goals. An architect may integrate mainframe systems with Unix and Windows servers to solve business issues whereas the system programmer is typically just focused on one platform.
