Is there a career in analytics in mainframes? There are careers like data scientist which are highly based on the data analytic. But they are usually meant for unstructured data analysis. And I think in mainframes there is not much unstructured data... so does such a role exist for mainframe programmers?

What is "analytics" in mainframe?

To put it simple - analytics is the field of data analysis.

Analytics will usually involve studying past historical data to research potential trends and or to analyze the effects of certain decisions or events. It can also be used to evaluate the performance of a given tool or scenario. All this is done to improve the business and you do it by gaining knowledge from the data you've, as a business. All this analysis can be used to make improvements or changes in the way business works.

If you do it all for the mainframe as a platform it is about "mainframe analytics".

people working on analytics, data mining, and friends
should not be concerned where the software being used runs ...

considering a z/system running z/OS a mainframe
and the same z/system running a few thousands of z/Linux images a server
is something that shows poor neuronal activity
by confusing the what it is with what it does
