I doubt this is done this way for big ships, may be for smaller ships - this is the way to go.

This is an ancient, and still current way of launching especially when the shipyard is up a river without the breadth of river to allow the 'stern first' way of launching.

I stay in Mumbai, which is surround by sea, but I don't stay near the shore, so haven't witnessed this ever. But it should be fun to see.
