Transfer dataset from mainframe to desktop using emulator?

Post by Babin Mehta »

Hi all

Is it possible to transfer the dataset from my mainframe to desktop using FTP and just using the 3270 session only and not using any other command. Can we do that or we need to always do it in batch like a traditional method?

Assuming that your 3270 session is actually an emulator as per your title then these usually have a transfer ability built in. This, generally, not FTP. Check out answers to similar questions.

You need to read the documentation for your emulator -- some of them support transfers, some don't.

If you are talking about a batch job on the mainframe using FTP to transfer a data set to your PC -- this is rarely, if ever, done. The mainframe must connect to a server and most desktop PCs do not run the server software to support such a transfer. The traditional method is either to use FTP on the desktop to connect to the mainframe, or use a batch job to FTP to a server and then transfer the server file to the desktop.
