z13 and z13s are different?

Post by Anil »

Hi,

z13 and z13s are different? Are they not just same and one is plural of other? Why such confusing names?
Thanks,
Anil

You could have found out Yourself by googling ( z13s or z13 )...

When I tell somebody to RTFM or STFW I usually have the page open in another tab/window of my browser,
so that I am sure that the information requested can be reached with a very small effort 8-)

No, they are not the same. In the last few years, IBM has put out a larger and smaller version of their mainframes (zEC12 and zBC12, for example). The machines are architecturally the same, but have different configurations and hence different capacities. For example, a z13 can have up to 10 terabytes of memory while the z13s can have up to 4 terabytes of memory.

IBM's Redbooks are also good at describing their machines. Check out https://www.redbooks.ibm.com/redbooks.n ... .html?Open which is titled IBM z13 and IBM z13s Technical Introduction and in particular Chapter 2 IBM z13 hardware overview and Chapter 3 IBM z13s hardware overview.

Anyone with the money can arrange to purchase a z13 or z13s, although certain features may be restricted geographically. However, the usual buyers of z13s will be smaller companies who don't need the capacity of a full z13 system.
