PRINCE2, PRojects IN Controlled Environments, Version 2, is a de facto process-based method for effective project management. It was developed by the UK government agency Office of Government Commerce (OGC) and is used extensively within the UK government as the project management standard for its public projects. The methodology encompasses the management, control and organisation of a project. PRINCE2 is also used to refer to the training and accreditation of authorized practitioners of the methodology who must undertake accredited qualifications to obtain certification.

PRINCE2 Projects in a controlled environment has 2 certification levels for people to attain. They are PRINCE2 Foundation and PRINCE2 Practitioner. The Foundation certification can be obtained by self study or an instructor led class followed by a 1 hour exam. The PRINCE2 Foundation covers basics and terminology. If after obtaining the PRINCE2 Foundation you wish to increase the level of certification then you are able to take the PRINCE2 Practitioner upgrade study at a later date.

The PRINCE2 Practitioner is a higher level qualification that provides the person with a high level of knowledge to operate projects within an organization supporting PRINCE2. A person that has obtained the PRINCE2 Practitioner is expected to be able to manage and tune PRINCE2 within an environment. This would be such that the practitioner can possibly do tasks such as write a methodology for an organization that utilizes PRINCE2. Presently the Practitioner is the highest level of PRINCE2 certification.
