Maximum record length in COBOL?

Hi,

For a requirement I'd need to the data in a single spanned record and forthat matter I'm thinking about the lrecl considerations. According to COBOL/VSE Language Reference, RECORD CONTAINS clause can be defined upto 1,048,575 bytes, but SAM limits it to 32,767. So what is the maximum possible record length in COBOL?

COBOL allows you to define a record with more than a million bytes. However, the operating system limits you to 32767. This is explained in Appendix B Compiler Limits of the COBOL Language Reference manual. So you can define in COBOL records that cannot be processed on the mainframe.
