Re: Future of a mainframe professional when most companies are trying to take off their mainframe systems?

Recently there had been very good hikes in salaries in mainframe. I am not sure why it happened in India? Anybody knows?

Re: OPEN the file in two different modes in COBOL.

You need to be careful here. IBM distinguishes between a data set which has never had any data written to it versus a data set that has been written to but has no records now. In the first case, you cannot read the data set so your application design fails. In the second case, there is no problem w...

Re: How to use IBM DBB.

Traditionally Mainframe applications development process made use of a(n) SCM tool. Many vendors provided and provides SCM tools, however, using a tool from a given vendor made a shop bound to that vendor. Using DBB makes it vendor independent - as far as adoption of other tools is considered - lik...

Re: How to use IBM DBB.

Different source code managers have different feature sets so there are differences between the different SCM. DBB has the advantage of working with COBOL and PL/I, which have been used on mainframes for more than 50 years. Not all SCM tools support COBOL or PL/I. So IBM DBB is a SCM tool from IBM?

Re: OPEN the file in two different modes in COBOL.

I should have elaborated it. The situation goes like this: Open a file in the program and if the file is empty write header data and the details to file. However in case the file is not empty we need to write the details only and not the header. Is there any way to toggle between the modes within th...

Re: Can we copy a PDS to another PDS?

If you are still using PDS you could run out of directory blocks when adding members to the PDS. If this happens, and you don't have a recovery utility like PDS86, you will have no choice but to copy the PDS to a new PDS with a larger directory. PDSE don't run out of directory blocks, so one common...

But then what's the point of having such a complex tool? If the result is same as we have with any SCM tool?

Re: Two offers - which one should I consider?

If the experience is less than 10 years, you should accept the offer with more salary. Then later you'll have age on your side to change. In India, there are very very few job for mainframe experienced resources. I heard that only abroad, specially in U.S. mainframe programmers are getting retired b...
