Detect which PDS should be changed to PDSE.
Hi, There are number of PDS which we are using for many libraries, for JCLs, PROCs and source code. But many of them are PDS, when I suggested them to use PDSE instead, no body responded. I was just thinking if I can figure out what are the PDS which can be converted to PDSE for better use of them, ...

need to shutdown CICS region to reorg.
Hi, I have started working at a company. In this company, we keep on getting this email like, a given CICS region needs to be shutdown as a given file which is allocated to it is full. It happens every now and then, actually nearly everyday for one region or other. Is this normal for a company which...

Count SPACE character without INSPECT and STRING in COBOL?
Hi Count SPACE character without INSPECT and STRING in COBOL? In one of the interview I was asked that how to count the space characters in particular variable (15 characters) without using INSPECT and STRING? My answer was to use PERFORM and use Reference Modification but it was not correct, can so...

zIIP, zAAP and CPU comparison.
Hi All,
Can we draw a comparison among zIIP, zAAP and CPU usag or is there a standard comparison of cost among zIIP, zAAP and CPU? For example, can we say that, zIIP is three times cheaper than general CPU and zAAP is 5 times cheaper than general CPU ?
Thanks

Thanks Robert.
I alos never was part of such migration project from end to end but in some of the companies I have worked with there were such migration programs butas you say, it looks like this not usually a good decision?

Re: Initiators in mainframes.
15569 WLM initiators are managed by WLM while JES initiators are managed by JES. One of the many differences is that WLM can allocate more or fewer initiators when needed by the workload, whereas JES initiators must be allocated or removed by operator command. From the applications programmer viewp...

Re: Initiators in mainframes.
Thanks. I did read about initiators and searche dbaout them. Actually for a requirement client has told us that they have to change the priotity of a job if it's delayed for some reason. They said that they want WLM to use the correct intiator instead of manually doing it. We are still discussing on...

What is the difference between "WLM initiator" and "JES initiator"? Could someone please guide me on this?

Re: Mainframe to Oracle migration, challanges?

Mainframe to Oracle migration, challanges?
In an interview I was aked if we can move the mainframe to open system architecture? For example, if an application on mainframe has got COBOL and DB2 usage, can we really migrate fully to a Oracle based architecture. Having briefly worked on a migration project. I quickly said, yes, we can make tha...

Re: How many JOB statements are allowed in a single JCL?
10424 So as many JOB statements I shall have those many jobs will not get submitted all once? They get submitted one by one? Jobs are not all submitted at one time -- the system will read the data set and each time a JOB statement is found a new job will be submitted to JES. This does not happen in...

Re: How many JOB statements are allowed in a single JCL?
10420 JCL is submitted line by line. A single data set with multiple JOB statements is still read into JES line by line. The million line data set had ONE JOB statement; I was pointing out that really large data sets can still be submitted. [ Post made via iPhone ] http://www.zmainframes.com/ext/sn...

Re: Count the number of records in a Dataset using REXX.
I have tried the follwoing solutions but with 1000 records there is not much difference between CPU use. I shall use REXX as we do not have much records to cound for now. But it helps in small testing easilty. With ICETOOL: //STEPCNT EXEC PGM=ICETOOL //TOOLMSG DD SYSOUT=* //DFSMSG DD SYSOUT=* //IN D...

Re: How many JOB statements are allowed in a single JCL?
10410 It depends on what is the value edited by system programmer in TIOT. No, it does not. The TIOT determines the number of DD statements a single step may have but has nothing to do with the number of JOB statements you may store in a data set (assuming that is what you mean by "single JCL&...
