MAX is a scalar function which gives the maximum value out of the column it is applied on. For a numeric column I understand how it can work but how MAX work on a CHAR column?

And what is the column has both numbers and characters.

Is there no tool which can right way update the VSAM itself, Robert?

If you specify FIELDS=NONE, the actually summing is not done, and with a non-unique key the first record of each key which arrives at the SUM processing is the one which is written out. If actual summing is not done then what exactly happens? Does SORT "ignore" to sum when it sees the key...

If we want to increase the length of the VSAM, how can we do this?

I have done it using File-aid but interviewer wanted to ask some toerh way. How is it possibe to increase the length?

The question was about KSDS but can there be similar ways for other VSAM files?

To remove duplicates from a file we can use SUM FIELDS=NONE in sort. But I don't understand it, why it removes dulicates? If I'll provide some values for SUM FIELDS, it will sum the number in that place then how it removes duplicates with NONE? Can anyone please explain this concept?
